Dating with Intention

Can you imagine being a 17 year old girl and deciding that dating was “not for you”? I’ve talked to many people about the span of five years in my life that I chose not to date, but I thought it would be a good idea to expound upon that subject. I had a few boyfriends before I made this decision. I later realized that I chose to date those guys mostly because they pursued me, and my friends thought that I “should” date them because we were cute together or because I needed a boyfriend.

Questions to Ask Before Walking Down the Aisle

We’re doing a series on dating and relationships. Join the conversation! Are there any specific topics you’d like us to write about? (This article was originally written in December of 2015 for Project Inspired, a website that encourages Christian teenage girls all over the world. Thank you for reading!)

So you’ve found the one you want to spend the rest of your life with. You have similar interests, you both love the Lord and you’re head over heels for your guy. What more do you need to know before you walk down the aisle?

A lot, actually. Just like a job interview, an employer would want to know that his or her prospective employee is properly qualified to fill the position.

Yes, it can be awkward to ask things you don’t really feel you have the right to know, but if you’re truly going to spend the rest of your lives together, there are some things you should inquire about in order to start off on the right foot. Premarital counseling will help with some of these, but not every couple goes though an intensive session that uncovers possible conflict-causing topics. You can ask these over dinner, during a walk at your favorite park or over the phone if that seems to cause less pressure and anxiety. Why Wait to Have Sex Until Marriage?

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. (1 Corinthians 6:18)

I waited until I was married to have sex. In fact, I wore a purity ring for years that was eventually replaced by my engagement ring because I was sure that decision was the right one for me. It’s important to make this choice for yourself and not judge other people who haven’t done the same. I definitely had the desire to be intimate, as any young woman with a pulse might, so I was constantly asked why I was saving my virginity for my future husband.

This subject is a very personal one, and you don’t owe anyone an explanation for whatever you choose to do. However, if you feel the need to respond, it’s best to do it with the spotlight on yourself and your personal convictions instead of simply saying “Everyone should do this because God wants us to.” Keeping God’s commands is very important, but it’s also good to know and share the benefits of abiding by His word. Keeping Christ in Your Relationship

When my now-husband and I were in the beginning stages of dating, we made great decisions and unfortunate mistakes that have helped us to be where we are now. I’m always up for an opportunity to share a window into that timeline to explain what worked for us and what we should have avoided as we tried to keep God at the center of our relationship. We took courtship seriously, and once we had the title of “boyfriend and girlfriend” it was after we knew marriage was our end goal.

Any attraction comes with temptation, and our journey was no different. It’s important to be on the same page with someone you think might be your future spouse so that you can be in agreement on how to tackle the trial and error of falling in love. Whether or not you have a storybook romance, God is there to help you navigate through the confusion to eventually create your happy ending. Is it Love or Lust?

Promise me, O women of Jerusalem, not to awaken love until the time is right. (Song of Solomon 8:4)

Simply reading through the Songs of Solomon might get your palms sweaty, as it’s one of the most racy books in the Word. It’s a preview into the account of lovers, but with its message are several warnings. It’s important not to get caught up in the race to third base because you can miss out on the true importance of romantic and platonic relationships. Continue reading “Is it Love or Lust?”

ConfirmationStation

Hello again. Thank you for stopping by. My, you sure look nice! What are you all dressed up for? You didn’t know I had a camera mounted in your room, did you? Oh shucks, calm down. I can’t see anything but the words I’m typing on this page.

Onto business…

I’m not one to really window shop. If I can’t afford it, I don’t want to spend my time wishing I had it and walk away sad that I don’t. I only go to the store if I’m in need of something, but I DO have one exception. Puppies! Just like children, it will be years before I have a little doggy of my own. I’ve already set my mind on a Pug. I want one just like the “Men in Black” costar with the smooth tan fur, deepset black face, and swirly pig tail. I lovingly call them “smashed face dogs” since it looks as though they’ve run into a wall at full speed. Continue reading “Puppy Love”
