Since my sister Khyra was a kid, I remember her always drawing and working on crafts in her bedroom like it was a business. I can even recall a time when I entered my art into an art show and she requested to submit her work as well. I thought she was joking until we showed up and she asked me where she could display her pieces. Even still, this young woman is serious about her business and it’s evolved into a legitimate art and apparel company that turns heads everywhere it’s seen. I was recently hired to model for a local Pasadena shop named April Blooms. The owner’s name is April and her mission is to help women of all shapes, sizes, and colors bloom and feel beautiful. I love an organization with a purpose, and the icing on the cake was finding out that she donates a portion of the shop’s sales to two organizations that support victims of human trafficking both at home in California and abroad through prevention, advocacy, prosecution, and restoration. Every embroidered tote bag and clutch was calling my name, as well as the clothing that has a sophisticated and high quality feel. When I booked the photoshoot for G.L.A.M. Camp for Girls after seeing the casting on Pink Couch Girl, I did what any normal adult would do: I Instagram stalked her co-director Seyi Famuyiwa. I remember telling Seyi when I submitted to be a model that–if nothing else–I’m so glad to see women of faith using their platform of fashion and content creating to spread the gospel. To me, that’s really all that matters in life and it’s comforting to see others that are of the same mindset. Going through her feed and reading her blog, I understood why these two had been chosen to organize the shoot. Her taste is impeccable and I’ve learned a few things about navigating social media from seeing how she cultivates her brand and online community. Don’t take my word for it, see for yourself.

My latest hobby is browsing through fashion blogger Instagram accounts. My favorites are the ones that have a pleasing color scheme, balanced images, and a common theme. When I came upon Pink Couch Girl, I was immediately impressed and clicked “Follow” with the quickness. It’s no wonder she actually has a course on how to get your Instagram feed in order. Days later, she posted that she would be co-creative directing a photoshoot for G.L.A.M. Camp for Girls. I was excited that I booked the shoot and would get to meet her in person. Her name is very fitting for her because Dr. Peace Amadi is one of the most calm under pressure people I’ve ever worked with. (Us creative types can usually get very frazzled very quickly!) Have you ever met someone and knew almost immediately that they were a world changer, and a force that wouldn’t let anyone or anything stand in their way? I felt this way upon my first encounter with Melinda Watts, the founder of G.L.A.M. Camp for Girls. I saw a model call for a photoshoot that was associated with this ministry and the Lord immediately said to submit my photo to them. It’s even interesting how that moment came to be because it was after browsing a few Instagram profiles that led me to media content creator Dr. Peace Amadi who was creative directing the photoshoot along with her friend and fashion blogger Seyi Famuyiwa. I have a special place in my heart for other women God leads to start ministries that focus on building up young ladies because I know they truly understand my calling to do the same. On Facebook, my timeline is usually flooded with the dark side of politics, education, food, family, community, you name it. With our generation, there’s a lot of talking and a lot less doing. This sparked Mone’t’s passion to make a difference by spreading positivity and a call to action to support the Black community. It was a breath of fresh air when she founded The Black Business Tour and I saw her consistently interviewing Black owned businesses or going to an event that recycles Black dollars. When I tell you Mone’t is on the move, I mean she is on the move. And she does it so fashionably, might I add! I remember the first time I had one of Amber’s peanut butter cookies, and it was the first time I ever said “Oh my gosh! This is so good and chewy!”about a peanut butter cookie. I’m not usually a fan of peanut butter cookies because most of the ones I’ve had in the past tend to be a little dry. I don’t know what her secret ingredient is, but all of her baked goods leave you craving for more. I think she’s got an advantage having a live in taste tester as a husband. Lol. Recently, she’s ventured into cookie cakes–which are no easy feat!–and they are just as good, if not better, than her individual cookies.
