When my wife and I moved to Pasadena, we realized that the decision would bring us within closer proximity to those we love, and bring greater distance between others we love. Proximity is interesting because it breeds a false sense of comfort to those around us. The assumption is made that if someone is within closer distance, you will actually see them more and be more involved in their life. While this can be true, there is something that trumps the rule of Proximity.
Being Intentional.
Some great friends of ours made the comment the other day, that even though we are further away from them, we see them more often. This is a beautiful gift because we realized that being intentional is what determines the course of the relationship. Proximity does not equal intentionality. There is no power in proximity. There is only convenience in proximity. Proximity can be used, but it is not the barometer of quality. I have lived years in past homes without ever knowing or meeting my neighbors. I have lived in dorm rooms at UCLA without saying a word to people down the hall. We are not the sum total of our surroundings. We are not a result of what was necessarily placed around us. The universe bends according to desire. Things like focus, intentionality and determination are things that move us based on our heart’s yearning. I’ve had my fair share of being interested in guys who admittedly didn’t follow The Lord, or their relationship with Him was on rocky ground. I even had to turn down someone I had feelings for because God didn’t want me to be with him. This person then told me that if my God didn’t want me to date him, then he didn’t want anything to do with my God.
You’ll find out pretty quickly what someone’s intentions are once you mention how sold out you are for Jesus—especially when your actions back it up. It is possible that you can invite someone you’re dating to church and they do genuinely accept Jesus and become a Christian, but that’s not a reason to purposely enter into a relationship with an unbeliever. Years ago, I excitedly told my coworker that I was going to visit my then boyfriend (now husband), and he asked me where my boyfriend lived. I explained that he lived in California, and this elicited an eyebrow raise accompanied by a smirk that showed me he thought I was naive. He went on to say, “Long-distance relationships don’t work, but whatever floats your boat.”
Well, that relationship worked out and we’ve been married for almost six years. There is a stigma that comes with long-distance relationships, and I even promised myself I would never have one. When I first found my home church, I wanted to be involved in everything 100 percent. I went to service on Sundays, had my small group meetings in the middle of the week, helped edit videos for the service, joined the dance team, volunteered my acting skills in the performing arts ministry and was about to join the choir. Is that calendar making your head spin or what?
Our overworked and overly busy society that takes pride in a full and color-coded calendar app has infiltrated the way we have church. It almost becomes more about the building than the body of Christ. Let’s make sure that our efforts of serving our Heavenly Father are balanced and coming from the right place. I remember applying for college and thinking that I would major in business because I was told it’s a degree you can use in pretty much any career. In my dream, I would go on to get a master’s degree. Maybe even a doctorate, if I was feeling fancy. That all changed when I found out that I couldn’t afford to go to a major university. My parents made too much money to qualify for financial aid, and I didn’t want to take out a student loan that I’d be paying off for the rest of my life.
As a straight-A student, it was embarrassing to me that I had to apply at a local community college because that was all I could afford to do back then. As I submitted my paperwork, my family received a letter from my future community college, and in this letter they described their new Television Production program. My eyes lit up. In my senior year of high school, part of my curriculum was learning multimedia programs and producing visual content for the campus. I applied to the college program, loved every year of it and would you believe God paid all of my tuition! I never thought in a million years that I would be able to make a career in the entertainment industry, but to this day it’s how my husband and I make a living.
In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps. (Proverbs 16:9)
I say all of this to make a point that sometimes it feels like everything is falling apart when, in actuality, everything is falling into place. I thought my grades made me. I figured my attention to detail, memory and quick mind would make me a great candidate to become a future CEO of someone else’s company. I had no idea that through the arts I would meet my husband, birth a ministry and reach fulfillment in God’s plan for my career.
Here are some things to remember when the walls start crumbling around you. It’s important to mention that this applies as long as you are in God’s will. That’s the only way He can guide you to the dream He has for you. Continue reading “When God Changes Your Dreams”
