The Importance of Quiet Time With God

This article was originally written in November of 2015 for Project Inspired, a website that encourages Christian teenage girls all over the world. Thank you for reading!

Come near to God and He will come near to you. (James 4:8)

What does quiet time look like? It’s different for every person, but in general it’s a time in your day that you commit to spending with God. This can include prayer, worship, reading, praising, journaling or all of the above. The main point is to make a habit of keeping Jesus at the forefront of your mind, ensuring that you are living according to the Holy Spirit’s will. Promo Tuesday with Couples Academy

Promo Tuesdays is where we highlight our brothers and sisters who are moving through ministry and small business while spreading the gospel as the Lord leads. Please support them by checking out their website and social media.

Once in a while, my church would have an event called “The Marriage Encounter”. In a way, it was like a group couple’s therapy where married church members would come and ask questions about the ins and outs of intimacy, in-laws, raising children, infidelity, you name it. A few of those times we would have a session with Hasani and Danielle Pettiford of The Couples Academy. I always looked forward to their insight, and am so glad I can follow them online through their website and social media in order to keep getting that objective and educated advice about marriage. Even if you’re not married yet, now might be the best time to discover some great tools that will help you in the future. You may be surprised to know how the habits and relationships you have now will affect your future spouse for good…or for bad. The best part about this for me is that their advice comes from a biblical foundation because my faith is the number one aspect of my world view. I hope you are blessed by their knowledge and the information they freely give. Let me know what you think! Continue reading “Promo Tuesday with Couples Academy”

Have You Apologized?

About seven years ago, I was at a leadership retreat that my church put on, and one of the sessions I attended featured a speaker who was gifted in the area of apologetics. At the time, I had never heard of the term, and my immediate thought was “Is this when a Christian apologizes to people who have been hurt by the church?” No. By definition, apologetics is reasoned arguments or writings in justification of something, typically a theory or religious doctrine. In Christianity it means that you explain to others why your religion is real and true using science, accurate Bible knowledge, historical evidence, etc.

How I Knew My Husband Was “The One”

I’ve been asked this question so many times by close friends and practical strangers: “How did you know your husband was the one you were supposed to marry?” A common answer–and I agree with this–is “When you know, you know.” There is a definite moment where it just clicks and you both realize “This is for forever.” It’s a concept that’s hard to grasp, and although I felt Jerrell was my future husband the first time we sat down alone and talked for hours, even I needed some reassurance.

It wasn’t until I took my romance to God that I really felt beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was time to prepare for marriage. As much as one could. Just like having kids, you never ever feel ready to be a husband or wife. You couldn’t possibly because there’s no way to rehearse it. I’ve even talked to couples who had lived together for years and felt like marriage was just a piece of paper, but once they tied the knot the experience and the security was noticeably different. Keeping Christ in Your Relationship

We’re doing a series on dating and relationships. Join the conversation! Are there any specific topics you’d like us to write about? (This article was originally written in July of 2015 for Project Inspired, a website that encourages Christian teenage girls all over the world. Thank you for reading!)

When my now-husband and I were in the beginning stages of dating, we made great decisions and unfortunate mistakes that have helped us to be where we are now. I’m always up for an opportunity to share a window into that timeline to explain what worked for us and what we should have avoided as we tried to keep God at the center of our relationship. We took courtship seriously, and once we had the title of “boyfriend and girlfriend” it was after we knew marriage was our end goal.

Any attraction comes with temptation, and our journey was no different. It’s important to be on the same page with someone you think might be your future spouse so that you can be in agreement on how to tackle the trial and error of falling in love. Whether or not you have a storybook romance, God is there to help you navigate through the confusion to eventually create your happy ending. Confirmation Station

This article was originally written in August of 2009 on my personal blog. Thank you for reading!

Being a Christian, I choose to go the way God leads me and seek His advice when it comes to making decisions in my life–major and minor. Confirmation is a way He lets me know I’m on the right path. For those of you who are unfamiliar with that term, it’s when God shows or tells you something more than once that directly relates to something you are going through. An example would be if you feel you are struggling with anger in your life, and you hear a scripture pertaining to that subject at church, on the radio, AND from a friend during a short period of time. This is a tool I’ve become familiar with using ever since my FIRST confirmation experience.

My family was in the process of buying a house, and it seemed like everything was going wrong and we might not get the home we’d been praying for, visiting, and planning our futures in. On a particularly stressful day, I asked God to help me find an encouraging scripture for us that would let us know everything would be alright and that the house was indeed ours. The answer to my question soon became my favorite scripture to date. If you remember, I mentioned it in my post titled “Speechless“. I shared it with my mom and I was so proud of myself because it was the first time I had taken it upon myself to FIND an answer in the huge bible she had given me months before. She even told one of her friends about it and laughed at how I’d done it.

A Hole is Where the Heart Is

This article was originally written in January of 2012 for Our Witness, a website that highlights personal testimonies of Christians all over the world. Thank you for reading!

Recently, my husband and I had our first encounter with serious repairs to our apartment. Ever since the first time it rained while we were living on our own, we’ve been dealing with leaks here and there in our office. There was even an incident when I noticed a leak above my computer desk right before we were about to leave for a meeting. If we had left just a few minutes sooner, my keyboard might have been soaked by the time we returned home and that would have been a whole other problem.

Even though the leak was apparent in three different spots, it was all caused by the same source. Patch work time and again just didn’t fix the problem, and our ceiling was only getting worse. This most recent leak was also the most damaging as water started seeping through the walls. We practically demanded management come and see for themselves what the problem was and repair it for good. Instead, we got a knock on the door by the same maintenance men who had been “fixing” this leak for the past year or so. Great. Continue reading “A Hole is Where the Heart Is”
