About seven years ago, I was at a leadership retreat that my church put on, and one of the sessions I attended featured a speaker who was gifted in the area of apologetics. At the time, I had never heard of the term, and my immediate thought was “Is this when a Christian apologizes to people who have been hurt by the church?” No. By definition, apologetics is reasoned arguments or writings in justification of something, typically a theory or religious doctrine. In Christianity it means that you explain to others why your religion is real and true using science, accurate Bible knowledge, historical evidence, etc.

But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. (1 Peter 3:14-16)

“Always be ready to explain your Christian hope.” Hmmm. I’ve heard that scripture before, and I have my personal testimony and biblical facts of why I believe what I do. However, I had no idea that there were men and women well versed in sharing historical and scientific proof of Jesus and why God is real. This is something I really admired about my husband when we were still just dating. It was like he had an arsenal of information to answer a question that would leave me completely stumped. It still takes faith to believe in a God that existed before the Universe was formed. It also takes great faith to believe that something came from a nothing that created a Big Bang.

I’m not inviting you into a debate, but I would advise that any and every Christian become familiar with the basics of apologetics. I’ve been watching debates, and a few phenomenal and well known apologists online that are able to answer critical questions that most non-believers–and even some of us believers–may have. To live by blind faith isn’t something God has asked us to do, and our faith in Him only carries us so far in a conversation with someone who says “Why should I believe that a loving God sends people to Hell?”

The following videos are only a starting point, and there is so much research out there if you want to dive into the deep end of information that supports our belief in the God of the Bible. Some of the statements they address are things that you may have heard said before:

1. Why is there evil and suffering?

2. Does Hell exist?

3. Doesn’t science disprove God?

4. How can Jesus be the only way to God?

5. Isn’t Christianity just a psychological crutch?

6. I could never take the blind leap of faith that believing in Christ requires.

7. It doesn’t matter what you believe as long as you’re sincere.
