When Should You Move on From Your Crush?

This article was originally written in September of 2015 for Project Inspired, a website that encourages Christian teenage girls all over the world. Thank you for reading!

Be strong, and let your heart be courageous, all you who put your hope in the LORD. (Psalm 31:24)

I think many people fail to understand how emotionally invested teen girls and young 20-somethings are when it comes to dating. Simply forgetting about a guy isn’t so easy to do, depending on how long you’ve liked him or how close you two have been. I’ve had crushes that ranged from a few weeks up to a few years. I’m talking a “Dear Diary, my heart is breaking! Why doesn’t he like me?” type of thing. I’m sure we’ve all been there.

Although I don’t personally believe dating is necessary until you’re entering a life stage where you are marriage-minded, I know most of you are hoping to have a relationship soon. I’d like to share some tips on who to avoid in the meantime. I’ll also briefly describe what you can do to get through the tough task of moving on. Is God Trying to Get Your Attention?

This article was originally written in April of 2015 for Project Inspired, a website that encourages Christian teenage girls all over the world. Thank you for reading!

When I first found my home church, I wanted to be involved in everything 100 percent. I went to service on Sundays, had my small group meetings in the middle of the week, helped edit videos for the service, joined the dance team, volunteered my acting skills in the performing arts ministry and was about to join the choir. Is that calendar making your head spin or what?

Our overworked and overly busy society that takes pride in a full and color-coded calendar app has infiltrated the way we have church. It almost becomes more about the building than the body of Christ. Let’s make sure that our efforts of serving our Heavenly Father are balanced and coming from the right place. As I was scrolling through Instagram, I came across this Christian brand called 139Made. I was already drawn to their beautiful designs on t-shirts and mugs, but when I noticed that the founder Inka Mathew joined in the fight against human trafficking, I knew that I had to feature them and get others to see what they are doing for those who currently cannot help themselves. 10% of each purchase goes to featured anti human trafficking organizations. Get your shop on. Continue reading “Promo Tuesday with 139Made”

What to Do When You and Your Friend Like the Same Guy

This article was originally written in October of 2015 for Project Inspired, a website that encourages Christian teenage girls all over the world. Thank you for reading!

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2)

Imagine this conversation: your best friend is talking about her new crush and mentioning how sweet he is and how she could gaze into his eyes forever. It only takes a few minutes before she says his name, and your heart sinks to the pit of your stomach. You and your best friend–who are used to sharing everything–are into the same guy! Obviously you can’t share a boyfriend, so what do you do? Continue reading “What to Do When You and Your Friend Like the Same Guy”

Jason Petty aka Propaganda came to Hawaii to perform back in 2008 when I lived there, and that’s when I met him for the first time. I was hired to be the camera person to record the event and was blown away at the talent and intellect that came from his musical poetry. Flash forward a few years and I meet him again through mutual friends in California about a year after moving here. It turns out he had met me and my now husband on separate occasions before we even knew each other existed. It’s funny how life works that way, and we all still talk here and there as our careers and families blossom. The best thing about witnessing him on stage is seeing how the audience has to consciously digest the message because the stories he tells are so deeply profound. If you haven’t heard of him, listened to his music, or watched his spoken word, I suggest you get started. Continue reading “Promo Tuesday with Propaganda”

5 Dating Mistakes To Avoid

This article was originally written in December of 2015 for Project Inspired, a website that encourages Christian teenage girls all over the world. Thank you for reading!

What are your motives for being in a relationship? Are you constantly checking in to make sure you’re in the right one? It takes a lot of effort to be romantically involved with another person, and it’s also a responsibility to do what it takes to keep it alive. If you’re like me, you would find it very helpful to have a playbook titled “Everything You Must Do to Find the One and Live Happily Ever After.”

No such thing exists, but here’s a start. I’d like to share five common mistakes that send relationships to an early grave. Continue reading “5 Dating Mistakes To Avoid”

I think a few of the best things we can do are: honor God, keep our faith in Him, and have a grateful heart. This is the philosophy behind GLAUDI, and success has a way of following this brand around. I was privileged to meet it’s founder Johana Hernandez a few months ago when she opened up her shop to have a women’s bible study. Not only is she out-of-this-world talented, she puts her faith into every garment. I hope you find her as inspiring as I do. Continue reading “Promo Tuesday with GLAUDI”

When God Changes Your Dreams

This article was originally written in August of 2015 for Project Inspired, a website that encourages Christian teenage girls all over the world. Thank you for reading!

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

I remember applying for college and thinking that I would major in business because I was told it’s a degree you can use in pretty much any career. In my dream, I would go on to get a master’s degree. Maybe even a doctorate, if I was feeling fancy. That all changed when I found out that I couldn’t afford to go to a major university. My parents made too much money to qualify for financial aid, and I didn’t want to take out a student loan that I’d be paying off for the rest of my life.

As a straight-A student, it was embarrassing to me that I had to apply at a local community college because that was all I could afford to do back then. As I submitted my paperwork, my family received a letter from my future community college, and in this letter they described their new Television Production program. My eyes lit up. In my senior year of high school, part of my curriculum was learning multimedia programs and producing visual content for the campus. I applied to the college program, loved every year of it and would you believe God paid all of my tuition! I never thought in a million years that I would be able to make a career in the entertainment industry, but to this day it’s how my husband and I make a living.

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps. (Proverbs 16:9)

I say all of this to make a point that sometimes it feels like everything is falling apart when, in actuality, everything is falling into place. I thought my grades made me. I figured my attention to detail, memory and quick mind would make me a great candidate to become a future CEO of someone else’s company. I had no idea that through the arts I would meet my husband, birth a ministry and reach fulfillment in God’s plan for my career.

Here are some things to remember when the walls start crumbling around you. It’s important to mention that this applies as long as you are in God’s will. That’s the only way He can guide you to the dream He has for you. Continue reading “When God Changes Your Dreams”

Sometimes looking your best helps you feel like you can conquer the world. Jessica Shakir is a celebrity makeup artist and hair stylist, and has been in the game for over 18 years. When you look at her, you ask yourself “How? Did she start out when she was 2 years old?” I know, I know. This girl doesn’t look a day over twenty. I’ve known her for over 8 years, and the most beautiful thing about Jessica is her heart for God. For years she’s been encouraging women to stay pure for God until they become a wife, and it’s exciting that she recently walked down the aisle to marry her very own Prince Charming a few short months ago. If you’d like to know more about her, give her a follow and you’ll see just why everyone she meets is absolutely smitten with her. Continue reading “Promo Tuesday with Jessica Shakir Beauty”
