Being a Christian in a Non-Christian World: Campus Edition

This article was originally written in August of 2015 for Project Inspired, a website that encourages Christian teenage girls all over the world. Thank you for reading!

Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. (1 Timothy 4:12)

You may be roaming a school campus in a few short months. This means high school or–for some of you–college is starting up again. I survived both with very few scars and I can tell you the balancing act is not easy, but it’s highly possible. My story isn’t a perfect one, but hopefully I can help to encourage you if you’re teetering on the edge or finding yourself isolated because of your beliefs.

If you’re anything like me and you’ve grown up in a Christian household, your parents were pretty strict. Not that I was always trying to get away with doing something I wasn’t supposed to, but it was a lot easier—and encouraged by my peers—if I was at school versus at home. When most students were hooking up, trying to coast through their classes and paying more attention to their outfits than their homework assignments, staying on course was one of the most difficult things for me to do. So how do we motivate ourselves to pack our values right next to our textbooks without fear of being ostracized? Continue reading “Being a Christian in a Non-Christian World: Campus Edition”

Being a Christian in a Non-Christian World: Career Edition

This article was originally written in August of 2015 for Project Inspired, a website that encourages Christian teenage girls all over the world. Thank you for reading!

Know that the LORD has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.(Psalm 4:3)

Being in the world and not of it is what we continue to seek, but what does that really look like? It is possible to live side by side with people who don’t value our beliefs, but sometimes we get distracted and can start to blend into the way our non-Christian counterparts behave. Among the several jobs I’ve had in my adult life, I’ve mostly witnessed this temptation while navigating through the entertainment industry as an actress in Hollywood. I’ve fully committed myself to this career, but the fact that I do it with biblical strings attached has literally gotten me laughed at on the set. I’ve been following She Paints Truth on social media for a while ever since my small group sisters told me about the awesome biblical daily encouragement they provide through art. It wasn’t until I saw a post from the founder Christie that I stopped in my tracks. Around the same time, we both posted about our walk with God and how He confirmed who our spouse was. Her story is a little different than mine, but the overall message is the same. After social media stalking her (I know I’m not the only one! Lol.), I thought it would be more than appropriate to give her a feature. I love what she’s doing in her personal testimony as well as her art platform to share the gospel. Check out her links and subscribe if you love Jesus, art, family, or all of the above. Continue reading “Promo Tuesday with She Paints Truth”

The Saviour

Our contributor Khyra has a gift for writing poems, and has graciously allowed us to share them with our readers. Stay tuned for more contributors in the future!

The Saviour

Don’t condemn me, don’t tempt me.

HE washed away my sins, now I’m fighting for my blessings

HE promises HE’ll never leave, this world is so messy

Praying for my state as my state of mind changes

Can’t go by what I feel, I just have to trust in my Saviour.

Distractions from myself, I could be the enemy it seems

The son of man has set me free, there is indeed a real enemy

Truth is all I need to see, JESUS came to set the captives free.

HE would never tempt me

Mind my own, and I’ll enjoy the blessings

Willing and obedient, take the frustration out of all of it

I haven’t apprehended

It’s a marathon, just jogging it.

Helpers from GOD along the way

Aiming not to go astray, an obstacle or two in the way

Learning and growing everyday.

Juicing now for energy

Apples, carrots, plus the greens

Slimmed down, mom said, “You’re way too lean.”

All the toxins made me feel unclean

Keep waking up from GODLY dreams

Praying without ceasing

At a pit stop for some healing

Gave in to the one my heart’s been craving

The only one who can save us.

The saviour.

In Love,

-Khyra L’amour

Promo Tuesday with Couples Academy

Once in a while, my church would have an event called “The Marriage Encounter”. In a way, it was like a group couple’s therapy where married church members would come and ask questions about the ins and outs of intimacy, in-laws, raising children, infidelity, you name it. A few of those times we would have a session with Hasani and Danielle Pettiford of The Couples Academy. I always looked forward to their insight, and am so glad I can follow them online through their website and social media in order to keep getting that objective and educated advice about marriage. Even if you’re not married yet, now might be the best time to discover some great tools that will help you in the future. You may be surprised to know how the habits and relationships you have now will affect your future spouse for good…or for bad. The best part about this for me is that their advice comes from a biblical foundation because my faith is the number one aspect of my world view. I hope you are blessed by their knowledge and the information they freely give. Let me know what you think! Continue reading “Promo Tuesday with Couples Academy”

Have You Apologized?

About seven years ago, I was at a leadership retreat that my church put on, and one of the sessions I attended featured a speaker who was gifted in the area of apologetics. At the time, I had never heard of the term, and my immediate thought was “Is this when a Christian apologizes to people who have been hurt by the church?” No. By definition, apologetics is reasoned arguments or writings in justification of something, typically a theory or religious doctrine. In Christianity it means that you explain to others why your religion is real and true using science, accurate Bible knowledge, historical evidence, etc.

How I Knew My Husband Was “The One”

I’ve been asked this question so many times by close friends and practical strangers: “How did you know your husband was the one you were supposed to marry?” A common answer–and I agree with this–is “When you know, you know.” There is a definite moment where it just clicks and you both realize “This is for forever.” It’s a concept that’s hard to grasp, and although I felt Jerrell was my future husband the first time we sat down alone and talked for hours, even I needed some reassurance.

It wasn’t until I took my romance to God that I really felt beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was time to prepare for marriage. As much as one could. Just like having kids, you never ever feel ready to be a husband or wife. You couldn’t possibly because there’s no way to rehearse it. I’ve even talked to couples who had lived together for years and felt like marriage was just a piece of paper, but once they tied the knot the experience and the security was noticeably different. If you ask any married couple about their relationship, they will tell you that it’s a lot of work. Successful marriages–and relationships in general–don’t just happen, they are cultivated. Something that is very important to me and my husband is finding other married friends who are committed to a healthy relationship, and who are willing to share the ups and downs of their journey and pray for our future as a couple. Tremell and Capitola Parker are a wonderful couple that we’ve been blessed to know for years. I could go on and on about the Godly advice they’ve given us and countless other married folk, but I’d rather you see for yourself. Watch the above video and others on their YouTube channel, and you’re sure to be blessed whether you’re single, dating, happily married, or hitting a rough patch. They’ve covered parenthood, date nights, fighting fair, celibacy, infidelity, and the important fellowship, among other things. Continue reading “Promo Tuesday with Team Married”

Praise and Worship Only?

But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. (John 4:23)

I remember when there wasn’t a Spotify, an iTunes, or a Pandora app. Heck, I remember when smartphones weren’t even a thing. Do I sound old yet? Listening to praise and worship music used to consist of the same 10-15 songs on repeat on the Christian radio station in my local area or the few songs I sang each week at church. This started to get old, and I remember riding in the car and telling my mom that I was so tired of Christian music. I soon found out that I didn’t have an issue with Christian music, but the ones I heard over and over just weren’t my thing. Continue reading “Praise and Worship Only?”
